There are so many great books in the world! But, not every one of them fits within Montessori ideals. For some families, this is not an issue. Others, however, want to stay closer to Montessori guidelines and read Montessori Friendly Books. But, what does this mean?
For children in the first plane of development {between the ages of 0 and 6-years-old} Montessori friendly books will:
- Avoid fantasy -- including characters and talking animals
- Content Rich -- have great stories or language that draws a child in
- Beautiful -- have beautiful, clear illustrations or pictures
For children in the second plane of development {between the ages of 6-years-old and 12-years-old} Montessori friendly books will continue to be content rich and beautiful, but they can include elements of fantasy, challenging topics, and other age appropriate themes.
"The secret of success is found to lie in the right use of imagination in awakening interest, and the stimulation of seeds of interest already sown by attractive literary and pictorial material." Maria Montessori
