I've been wanting to get Henry some Montessori color tablets for awhile. But, honestly I just couldn't stomach the cost for a set like this:
So, I set out to make some of my own! To make you need:
- 3" x 2" wooden tablets - I found a set of 6 for around $3 at Michael's
- Colored acrylic paint - I started with red, blue, yellow, and green
- White acrylic paint - I used an entire small bottle
- Clear glossy coating paint - I used Martha Stewart High Gloss Finish
To make:
Paint one of the tablets with each original color from the bottle. Set those tablets aside to dry.
Then, mix a small amount of white paint into the original color to lighten it. Then, paint another tablet with the lighter color. Repeat for each color.
Next, mix more white paint to the lighter color to lighten it further and paint the tablets. Continue lightening and painting tablets to complete as many as you would like.
After letting the paint dry for several hours, apply glossy coating until you've achieved desired shininess. I used 2 coats. Let dry for several hours.
That's it! This whole project cost me $10 and was really simple. Hopefully, Henry likes them.
