Montessori at Home: Children's Books We've Loved Lately
Tagged in:
Montessori Friendly Books,
Is there anything better than walking into a room and finding a child snuggled up with a good book? Maybe snuggling up and reading it to them! I don't care how old my children get, we continue to find so much joy in reading good, Montessori friendly picture books together.
As a Montessori parent, I find that books are just a great way to expose my children to a variety of people, places, and stories. I never want to push reading onto any of them, but I want to make it a connecting time, something they find pleasure in, and really follow their lead. So far, that's working! Even in the summer, taking a few books outside is one of our favorite Montessori activities!
Montessori Friendly Picture Books We Love Right Now
Here's a look at some of the picture books that my kids have really enjoyed reading lately. We also have a few longer chapter books that we read but I choose to stick to just picture books here.
Toddler Books
At 16-months-old, Penelope doesn't have a lot of time for reading. She will look at a couple of pages with me and then run off to her next thing. But if she's picking a book, she's grabbing Dear Zoo | Summer Babies | First 100 Nature Words
Preschool
At almost 4-years-old, Teddy is super super into reading. He would read for hours at a time if we could give him that kind of time. Right now, he reaches for longer stories. He still really wants books with pictures but longer and longer ones. Right now he's reaching for: One Morning in Maine | Summer Vacation
Kindergarten
Six-Year-old Gus really will read just about anything right now. He really loves animal stories (not necessarily books about animals, but living stories told about animals.) He's recently enjoyed: The Blue Whale | If Tigers Disappeared | The Wolves of Yellowstone. He also really loves Billions of Bricks: A Counting Book about Building
Elementary
Nora, at 9-years-old is much pickier about the types of picture books she will sit and read. She loves longer stories, and especially loves true stories. She is very into biographies right at the moment and her favorites lately have been: It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way | The Kid from Diamond Street: The Extraordinary Story of Baseball Legend Edith Houghton | The Spirit of Springer: The Real-Life Rescue of an Orphaned Orca. She also loves longer realistic stories like Minn of the Mississippi
Henry, at 12, doesn't read many picture books. But he loves comics and information based books. A few favorites lately have been: Prisoners of Geography: Our World Explained in 12 Simple Maps | DC Comics Encyclopedia | Olympians Comics
There are so many amazing children's books out there that it can be overwhelming. I hope these provide some fun Montessori inspired choices for your family.
Any of these make your favorites list?
